It has always been my concern that my company's employees realize that Customer Service means that the customer comes first when it comes to service. Even when
the customer is disturbed by the cost of the electrical services, we take the time to offer suggestions on methods that will help to reduce those costs.
Mission Statement
When we started out with the serious business of electrical cost allocation and distribution, we decided that our position would be to work with the Utility Company and our customers to try to reduce the
problems associated with the ever increasing usage of electricity. In the early 1970's, Con Edison was experiencing problems producing sufficient power to service their electrical distribution system. We
demonstrated that uncontrolled and frivilous electrical usage would only increase the cost of the Utility's services. Submetering was an obvious solution: promoting conservation, helping the Utility meet their
reduced power requirements, and aiding the consumer by reducing their cost of electricity. Our assessment of the situation worked well for both the consumer and the Utility Company. Submetering,
as an industry was reborn and is still growing, providing benefits to both service provider and service user. Company Background
In 1967, the Office of James Carey, specializing in electrical and mechanical upgrading of electrical distribution systems in both commercial and residential properties and electrical rate consultation, came
into being. Mr. Carey's clientele, some of the most prominent and popular real estate agents in New York City, were acquired upon the unfortunate death of Alfred J. Kleinberger, whom he was working
for at that time. The Office of James Carey was primarily involved with the peformance and maintenance of electrical rate surveys (the accepted method of billing commercial tenants for their
electric consumption) and preparation of electrical and mechanical plans and specifications for the upgrading of commercial properties. Realizing the necessity and opportunity for the reinstatement of
commercial electrical submetering (which was basically discontinued in 1951 for any new commercial properties and completely discontinued in residential properties in 1952), he set into motion the rebirth
of submetering by installing submeters in two commercial properties in Manhattan. After testing the results with the building owners and the tenants for two years (especially during the energy and oil crisis
of 1973 and 1974), he took the results to Consolidated Edison. He showed how there was no adverse effect for the tenants or the owner and did produce substantial reductions in the use of the energy. After
some consideration of the legal aspects, the Public Service Commission (PSC) decided to permit commercial buildings that had been submetered prior to 1951, to return to submetering as a method of
electrical distribution. Seeing the potential for submetering in residential applications as well as commercial, he continued to fight for all energy consumers to have the right to submeter electric in
multi-tenanted properties. He incorporated a new company, in 1975, to perform submetering services and aid the cause of electric conservation which was and still is so necessary in this day and age. The
company name, of course, is Bay City Metering Company, Incorporated. |
